Sita Rai Tells Her Story

Family
I am from remote area Solukhum Kanku 8. I have one older brother and one younger brother and me!  My family background is farming and we grew up on the farm with farm cows and buffalo. At that time very few girls went to school. All boys they went to school. I had same problem with my parents. My two brothers were allowed to go school. I was not allowed to go school.  I stayed at home and helped on the farm to take care of the animals.

Education
When I was older at 12 years old I wanted to go school. When I was 13 years old I went to school for 6 months. That school was also very far from home. The class was at night. For around 2/3’s of the month for me it was very difficult to go there. I couldn't continue but I learned some of the alphabet and arithmetic. I did practice myself around age 14 or 15. At grade 4 I started my school life. I studied continuously until grade 10 class. I passed grade 10 but my two brothers they didn't pass the 10 class. After school life I stayed at home for 1 year.  I didn't have money to go to join a college.

Early Working
After one year I came to Kathmandu and I worked at Pashmina. Pashmina is just the indigenous word for cashmere used throughout the Himalayan region. The term, "Pashmina" and "Cashmere" are synonymous for soft, fine, high-quality fiber. The ancient name of the precious shawls still made by hand in the Central Asian regions is called "Pashmina."

Working in the Trekking Business
After a year and a half in Kathmandu I heard about 3 Sisters. The 3 Sisters, Lucky, Dicky and Nicky Chhetri started to provide professional female guides and assistants for trekking in the Himalayas in 1998. In Nepalese society a woman is expected to stay at home and was not allowed or encouraged to work outside. Since 2002 we, Nirma Rai and myself, came to Pokhara in Western Nepal, to take trekking guide training. This was my first training. Our basic training is one month. After training I did a 5 day trek. At the beginning we have to carry bags, we worked as porters. At that time we didn't have much work to do. I went trekking to Tilicho lake. I worked 2 years as a porter then I became a guide.  I did rock climbing and trained for Ice climbing in 2006. I took guide licence training in 2006.

Family Problems
Back home my mom got sick and I had to bring her to Pokhara for treatment. She had heart problems, unfortunately heart treatment is very expensive and I didn't have any money. I took a Loan from my office and some from a friend. I worked to pay off the Loan.

Further Education
After I really like to join college. We went to college but we were not really good in college. I have just finished my exam and I am waiting for results.

I learned many things ! I think life is school !
